‘Bayern didn’t want to draw Madrid’

Carlo Ancelotti believes Bayern Munich are as worried about playing Real Madrid in the Champions League as Madrid are about Bayern.

The clubs were paired in last week’s draw with Atletico Madrid and Chelsea meeting in the other semi-final.

Ancelotti has said in an interview with El Mundo, quoted by AS, that the holders won’t be looking forward to playing his side either.

“I know they’re not happy playing us,” Ancelotti said.

“All the teams in the draw were complicated opponents, each with their own style.

“In addition, the Champions League is a treacherous tournament, very hard to win, and strange things can happen.

“Chelsea won it two years ago, by surprise. In Milan, where the European Cup is as important as in Madrid, the club also had the goal of being in the last four.

“If you get to the semi-finals, one year you’ll end up winning.”

Ancelotti also claimed Tata Martino had a harder job at Barcelona than he does at Real Madrid, gave his thoughts on Spain’s treatment of referees, and revealed Cristiano Ronaldo could be involved in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey final.

Madrid were almost out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage when Borussia Dortmund threatened to overhaul Los Blancos’ 3-0 first-leg lead, taking a 2-0 victory in the second-leg.

Ancelotti was asked what he said to Madrid’s players at half-time against Dortmund, who had scored twice before the interval.

“First I tried to encourage them, because the environment was very negative,” Ancelotti admitted.

“And then I did tactical adjustments.

“Still, at the end of that game it looked like a tragedy. So I lived too, eh…but then came the draw and we saw that we were there and not Dortmund.

“I’m calm and I trust my staff,” Ancelotti said when asked about his manner in the locker room.

“Football sometimes is indecipherable and it changes in an instant. Dortmund is the example. If we scored the penalty [missed by Angel Di Maria] then it would have been like a friendly.”

With Atletico, the League leaders, in the other half of the semi-final draw, Ancelotti was asked for his thoughts on his city neighbours.

“They play according to the characteristics of their players. We can’t play like that, and they can’t play like us.” he said.

“Atletico are having a fantastic season and I really like their defensive organisation. They work hard and know how to take advantage of Diego Costa.

“But it’s not a style that fits with the philosophy of Real Madrid.”
