Alonso wants ‘sensible’ calendar

Xabi Alonso has revealed he would like to see the football calendar redrawn to avoid players suffering serious injuries.

The Real Madrid midfielder was speaking at a promotional event and was asked about the fitness of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was substituted with 10 minutes to play in Madrid’s 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

“Cristiano had played well and was removed as a precaution. I don’t think he has a problem for Saturday,” the Spain international said.

“He has a minor problem, like many other players. But it is true that the schedule is very tight.

“Since September we’ve been playing Wednesday-Sunday and finally the World Cup is approaching.

“Diego Costa has been injured, Marcelo has been injured, and there will be more injuries.

“We have to get a more sensible calendar. We started playing in the Cup in January and we don’t have the rhythm other countries have.”

Alonso added however that the preparation of Coach Carlo Ancelotti is geared towards getting the players in the best shape.

“He approaches the game correctly, and then we can play well or not,” Alonso continued.

“But we are confident in the way we prepare and train for matches in the week. We fully support his methods.”

Alonso also publically supported Pepe after the defender accused Sergio Busquets of stamping on his head in the recent Clasico fixture.
