‘Malaga paid for mistakes’

Bernd Schuster believes his Malaga side are paying the price for their errors after losing at home to Espanyol.

Malaga were beaten 2-1 by Javier Aguirre’s men and went down to 10 men for the third time in four games.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Schuster rued the indiscipline of his team following Pablo Perez’s red card.

But the former Germany international also blamed referees for the decisions that have gone against his side, suggesting many of them have been unfair.

“This has been a day like any other since I’ve been on the Malaga bench,” Schuster said.

“I said months ago I wasn’t happy with the decisions that go against us.

“We’re going through something which beggars belief.

“The result wasn’t entirely the fault of the referee but there are decisions which frustrate us and affect our morale.

“We haven’t had any decisions go in our favour.”

Schuster added that it’s not just decisions in the course of 90 minutes that have hindered Malaga but also decisions from the authorities after Duda was banned for four games.

“Is a player in Spain ever given a three or four-game ban? It’s unbelievable,” the Coach continued.

“Naturally I disagree and I hope we do something about it. There’s the possibility of reducing it. One month is a lot. It’s excessive.”

Schuster did concede, however, that Malaga’s performance against Espanyol wasn’t good enough to warrant the points – and if it was, the decisions of the referee would matter less.

“The officials did things I don’t like but we’re here to talk about football.

“We should be winning games like this but we haven’t shown enough intelligence. We have to learn from games like this and at the very least, we should have a draw.

“If we played better we wouldn’t be blaming the referee. We’ve paid for our mistakes.”
