Diego Simeone has said he is happy Atletico Madrid control their own fate after the win over Real Betis left them top of the League.
Atletico ran out 2-0 winners at Benito Vilamarin to go top of the table, above Real Madrid on the head-to-head record.
Barcelona’s 4-3 win in El Clasico maintained Atleti’s lead, with Atletico travelling to Camp Nou on the final weekend of the season.
“We were facing a tough game [against Betis], against a team with a lot to play for,” Simeone said.
“In the first half we didn’t do well enough but in the second, we changed up a gear.
“This win gives us the peace of mind that we’re depending on ourselves for whatever happens.”
Atleti’s win came via goals from Gabi and Diego Costa after Betis had Braian Rodriguez dismissed.
“The sending off made it much more difficult for Betis and we took advantage of the situation,” Simeone added.
“We took points from a game that was very important to us.”
