Marcelo ‘stronger’ than racism

Real Madrid defender Marcelo has insisted that he is ‘stronger than any sort of racism’ after being subjected to abuse on Wednesday.

During the Blancos warm-down this week after they had beaten Atletico Madrid 3-0 in the Copa del Rey, monkey noises were heard from the top north corner of the stand where around 500 Atletico fans were still waiting for permission to leave.

The incident was first highlighted by British journalist Graham Hunter, and was then picked up by various media outlets first.

The Brazil international tweeted after the match without reference to the abuse, but has since been back on Twitter to thank fans for their support.

“I want to thank all of you for the support you have given me today,” the message read.

“And even though this is not the first time this happens I can promise you that we are stronger than any types of racism.

“This will never affect me or my family.”
