Racing kicked out of next year’s Copa

Racing Santander have been banned from next year’s Copa del Rey after refusing to play their match against Real Sociedad.

The Racing players took to the pitch for Thursday night’s quarter-final second-leg but soon informed the referee that they were not going to participate in the match.

The game was abandoned and La Real, who won the first-leg 3-1, will progress to play Barcelona in the semi-final.

Racing had said they would not play in the match unless the club’s board resigned. They have gone several months without pay.

Marca reports that in accordance with the competition’s regulations, Racing have been removed from next year’s tournament and been given a €3,000 fine.

No players have been punished individually. Racing’s Coach, Paco Fernandez, had said he hoped the club wouldn’t receive any punishment for their actions.

A shareholders’ meeting called by court order this morning unanimously approved to dismiss the current board and appoint a new one.
