Alonso: Work still to do

Xabi Alonso has said that despite Real Madrid going top of the League on Saturday there is still much work to do.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema saw off Granada and put Madrid top for the first time since May 2012, when they won the title under Jose Mourinho.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both play on Sunday so Madrid will remain two points clear for at least 24 hours.

“It took a great performance [to beat Granada],” Alonso told reporters after the match.

“They had a good shape in the first-half and we found it hard to break through.

“But we got it in the end and got the points.

“There’s a lot of work to do but we’re where we want to be.”

Ronaldo paraded the Ballon d’Or before kick-off while the Santiago Bernabeu crowd showed their appreciation with a mosaic congratulating the forward.

Alonso was in agreement with the supporters and praised his Portuguese teammate.

“We were all excited for Cristiano.

“The fans have supported him for many years and we are happy for him.

“As a team we must keep improving, correcting things.

“Even if they are good, they can be better.”
