Xabi Alonso: I feel at home in Madrid

Xabi Alonso has admitted he is ‘completely at home’ in Madrid as he puts pen-to-paper on a new two-year deal.

The Spain international has extended his deal at Santiago Bernabeu for another two years, despite heavy interest from abroad.

The midfielder though, has claimed that he is delighted to stay with Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

“I’m completely at home here,” he told a Press conference. “I’ve spent five marvellous seasons at Madrid and hope the next two are just as happy.

“I would like to thank the club and all of the fans who have always shown me great affection and I am very grateful to them for that.

“It’s been a long process. There was always dialogue with the club. After my operation, I wanted to wait to see how I felt, what level I would be at once I was recovered – that was a very important factor for me.

“I didn’t want to make any kind of decision until I knew that I was fully fit and back to the level I demand of myself. The club made it easy for me and once I had convinced myself, it was very easy. I am very happy and the club seems to be very happy too.

“I’ve known all along that Real Madrid is the best club for any player to be. Both my wife and I are happy in Madrid and we were both in agreement that we both wanted to continue living here.

“The only pressure was the pressure I put myself under because I had to really think long and hard about it. I didn’t want to make a decision while I was too comfortable, or injured.

“I’ve no idea [what will happen in 2016]. I’ll see how I feel at the time. It will be another important decision for me to take. We’ll see what level I’m at and if I am able to continue, retire from the game or do take up something completely different.

“There weren’t any offers [from other clubs]. It was just a question of finding the right moment. I decided to stay here and I don’t know anything about any offers. Perhaps my agent knows about that”.
