Xabi Alonso signs Madrid extension

Xabi Alonso has ended months of speculation by signing a new two-year deal at Real Madrid.

The midfielder’s existing deal was set to end in June 2014, and with talks at a standstill for some time, many reports were linking the Spain international with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu.

However, on Wednesday night the former Liverpool revealed via his official Twitter feed that he had put pen to paper on extension until 2016.

Posting a picture of Los Blancos’ ground, he wrote: “This will be my home for another two years. I’m delighted to share this with you. I’m very, very happy. Hala Madrid!”

It is believed that Alonso’s salary will increase from €4m to €6m per year after tax.

A Press conference will be held on Friday.
