Ronaldo: Priority is collective awards

Cristiano Ronaldo has mused that his priority is winning with his team, rather than as an individual, even as he is happy to be named the League’s MVP.

The Real Madrid man last night collected the Most Valuable Player title for 2012-13 at the Spanish Football League’s annual awards ceremony.

“The priority is always collective trophies, because they are what give you the chance to win something individually,” Ronaldo has mused to Portuguese outlet SIC in reaction.

“The trophy for the most valuable player in La Liga is a major award. It is a prize in the League that I play. I’m very happy.

“I must thank my teammates because individual awards are always reflective of a good collective.

“Objectives for 2014? I hope that it is a better year than this one. I’m working and I’m focused for things to go well.

“We want to keep progressing in the League. I feel fresh, useful and available to help Madrid and the national team.”

The 28-year-old will be with Portugal at next summer’s World Cup, thanks to his four goals scored over the qualifying play-off round against Sweden.

“A World Cup without Portugal is not the same thing. Portugal has to be involved. Now we must try to give our best. We cannot set the bar very high, we know that everyone wants to win the World Cup. We are not title contenders, and perhaps this can remove a weight for us. We must be aware that it will be a complicated World Cup, in a good and friendly country. Hopefully we can progress from the group stage and then we shall see. We cannot promise the World Cup, but we want to have a good tournament.”
