‘Barca and Madrid want to avoid us’

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini believes both Barcelona and Real Madrid want to avoid his team in the Champions League.

Pellegrini saw his side earn a far from comfortable 4-2 victory over Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday and accepts his side are likely to finish second in their group behind high-flying Bayern Munich.

However, the Blues’ boss thinks no-one will relish coming up against free-scoring City when the knock-out stage of the competition comes around.

“Spain has strong teams, particularly Barcelona and Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid are having a very good season,” the Argentine was quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

“But I’m not afraid of who we are going to play in the next round. It’s not a major problem. Anything can happen over two games but we have a strong squad.

“People might say it is difficult for us to play against Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico or even Paris Saint-Germain, another team we could face.

“But all of them would not be happy to play against us,” he declared.
