Martino: A game of two halves

Tata Martino admitted to both happiness and concern after seeing Barcelona progress to the Champions League Last 16 with two games to spare.

The Catalans saw a comfortable first half against Milan with goals from Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets ended by a Gerard Pique own goal, which made for an uneasy second half, until Messi netted a second for the 3-1 win.

“It was a game of two halves and two faces,” Martino considered to reporters afterwards.

“It was one Barca in the first half and another in the second. It was a difficult game, as Gerard Pique’s mistake weighed heavily on us and allowed Milan the chance to get back into the match.

“I don't dislike either version. We did a good job in the first half and in the second half we needed to take advantage of open space. Attacking with three forwards invites us to attack more directly.

“Qualifying on matchday four means the pressure is off, but we still have an obligation to finish first in the group.

“Because there are no real surprises in the groups you can assume that the favourites will get through, but you never know who you will draw in the next round.

“We wanted to get out of the group early in order to feel better. We allowed our opponents to get back into the game, however, and that worries me.

“We have to be more decisive when it comes to winning back possession. There is always something that can be improved.

“I would love it if everyone liked how we play, but that’s not the case and that’s why we train on a daily basis.”

The tactician was asked for comment on Messi managing to break a goalless run of three games.

“Making negative assertions about Leo [Messi] has risks. He played phenomenally well today.

“I was never worried about Messi, because he’d already been through phases like this. It was wonderful to see him convert all that expectation into goals tonight.

“We knew he would’ve resolved the match for us again.”
