Aguirre motivated by Atleti

Javier Aguirre says that he and his Espanyol team are motivated to end their losing streak by facing up to Atletico Madrid this weekend.

Saturday sees Atleti visit Cornella-El Prat with a 100 per cent record in La Liga after the first eight rounds of action.

Whilst Los Pericos head into the fixture on the back of three straight defeats, their Coach is optimistic that a response will come against Diego Simeone’s side.

“It is an incentive to face one of the top teams in the League, what better encouragement and motivation is there than to play against a big club?” asked Aguirre in his pre-game conference today.

“My team is good. These have been hard and long days. We have taken the break to correct our mistakes and our motivation is at its highest, wanting to vindicate matters.

“We feel that we should give the fans a game that they want, with attitude.”

Aguirre was asked to consider his former side’s current form and their notable striker Diego Costa’s recent goalscoring form.

“He is in a good moment, but all of their players are. They are a team in every sense of the word, anyone could score for them.

“This weekend’s game will be competitive and uncomfortable for both teams.

“We can stop the opposition in many ways with our weapons, we cannot let them be comfortable in our stadium, we must be together and not allow them to play their game.”
