Valencia boss Miroslav Djukic believes Malaga are direct rivals to his club for a Champions League spot this term.
The two clubs clash at the Mestalla on Saturday in the first La Liga game of the new campaign, and Djukic says he is already aware that the outcome could prove vital come the end of the season.
“Malaga are a team that will be fighting with us to get into the Champions League. Therefore, we have to be conscious of the fact we are playing against one of our direct rivals,” the Serbian told a Press conference, before telling of the threat posed by Bernd Schuster’s new-look side.
“They are a team that likes a lot of touches on the ball, that wants to keep the same style of play despite the change of Coach.
“Their pattern of play is still the same and they have some quality players with good technique.”
As for Valencia, new boss Djukic says he is excited about the new project at the club.
“I’m really looking forward to the start of La Liga to see how the team responds and how it develops throughout the year. Hopefully we’ll do well and everything works from the beginning.
“I’m happy with the team I’ve got and with the players that make up the squad. Everyone is fine after the respective games with their national sides and have come back in shape,” he revealed.
At the same time, Djukic made special mention of Ever Banega, who he qualified as one of the leaders of his team, and Sergio Canales, who is making his comeback from injury.
“Banega is showing he is a leader who can bring a lot to the team. He is a key part of the side, although we want all our players to be key to our success.
“Canales is ready to compete but we don’t want to rush him. We’ll have a look and see how he is and decide after training whether he will be in the squad or not.”
Finally, Djukic spoke about possible reinforcements to his attacking line-up.
“Valencia are interested in different players and right now I don’t know who will be coming.
“[Dorlan] Pabon is a great footballer, someone who fits our profile, who is always looking for space, but I can’t say any more than that,” he explained.
