Everton snap up Atletico stopper

Everton have snapped up Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Joel Robles on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee, according to Sky Sports.

The 23-year-old impressed on loan at Wigan Athletic during the second half of last season and will be reunited with former Latics’ boss Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park.

Joel made 13 appearances in all competitions for Wigan last term, unseating Ali Al-Habsi as first choice, and was a member of the side that caused a major shock with a 1-0 FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in May.

He was also part of the victorious Spain Under-21 squad at the recent European Championships in Israel and will compete for the No 1 jersey at Everton with USA international Tim Howard.

The Madrid-born player becomes the third ex-Wigan player to join Everton this week following the signings of Arouna Kone and Antolin Alcaraz.
