Former Atletico Madrid player Joaquin Peiro has urged Los Colchoneros to build their future around their youth set-up.
Atleti are understood to be keen to further develop their cantera in the coming seasons and it is an approach that has the backing of their 1962 Cup Winners’ Cup midfielder.
“Building a solid cantera has been a great success,” Peiro reflected to reporters this week.
“Atletico Madrid with a youth system will always have a reserve ready to make the jump into the first team, because there are players there who are excelling and are doing very well.
“In the history of the club, the cantera has played a fundamental part. The cantera has brought through great players who have helped the club grow in times that were economically tough.
“The identity of this club must be to work with the cantera, for the joy of seeing players within the club develop and become first team players, it is something that must be maintained.”
