Maggio: Fate went against Italy

Christian Maggio regretted Italy’s defeat to Spain on penalties, in a Confederations Cup semi-final he saw his side play as superior in part.

The Italians were defeated 7-6 on penalties by Vicente del Bosque’s men following a goalless 120 minutes of play.

“It went badly and it’s disappointing, as we put in a great performance against the World and European Champions,” Maggio commented afterwards to Rai Sport.

“Fate went against us again. Now we will play for third place with heads held high, hoping next time it will go better.

“At certain times of the game we were superior. Spain are always Spain, but we had that extra determination for 120 minutes. As usual, we have problems on penalty shoot-outs, but we’re on the right track.

“We all gave our heart and soul tonight. I had another chance to score, but the ball just isn’t going in for me. I can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if we had gone into the break ahead.”
