Sandro Rosell has reflected that signing Neymar was so to improve Barcelona, not to spite other clubs interested in the star.
The Catalans concluded negotiations with Santos at the weekend for a €25m purchase of the youngster this summer, just as Real Madrid reportedly entered into talks with a late bid of their own.
“We don’t sign players to smack people around, we do it to improve our team even more,” commented Rosell on Sunday.
“Each year we try to improve the team and we believe that Neymar can help us with our style [of play], even though this year has been fantastic.
“When will we present him? We have to talk it over with the Brazilian Football Federation. We’ll present the player as soon as possible. The important thing is that we have an agreement.”
Rosell was asked also of the controversy surrounding decorating the statue of Christopher Columbus in the city with a Barcelona shirt.
“I agree with what our sponsors do. As far as marketing goes, it was a success. Our kit was seen throughout the world so we’re happy.”
