Aguirre-Espanyol talks stall

Javier Aguirre’s future at Espanyol is apparently at risk, amid reports that contract renewal talks are not progressing as expected.

The Mexican, who has turned around Los Pericos’ fortunes since arriving in November, has a contract running until June, but negotiations on a renewal were thought to be running smoothly.

Talks were expected to have concluded and an agreement announced once the team achieved League survival, but three weeks on delays continue and it is understood that no contact from the club has been made in recent days with Aguirre’s agent.

President Joan Collet’s assessment on RAC1 this week that ‘economic differences’ are to blame has now been followed up in Mundo Deportivo with reports of Aguirre’s concern at the direction of the sporting project.

The Coach was reported recently as only willing to make compromises on the salary and length of any contract signed if he was guaranteed that the squad would not be dismantled in the coming transfer window.

Aguirre’s former club Osasuna and Malaga are both reportedly interested in possibly working with the 54-year-old next season.
