Spain’s reaction to Ferguson retirement

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to retire from Manchester United at the end of the season is already prompting rumours surrounding Jose Mourinho.

Ferguson has confirmed, via a club statement today, that he will be leaving the Red Devils in May after 26 years and 13 League titles.

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly,” explained the 71-year-old.

“It is the right time. It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.”

Ferguson will take up a duel role of club ambassador and director at Old Trafford from the summer.

Real Madrid Coach Mourinho, who is otherwise linked with a return to England with Chelsea this summer, and Everton’s David Moyes are seen as candidates to replace the Scot.

“Sir Alex Ferguson retires; Mou and Moyes emerge as replacements,” wrote AS, whilst Marca led with “Ferguson retires – He will leave the Manchester United bench after 26 seasons and 38 titles.”

Sport ran with: “Ferguson retires and leaves Manchester United – The most successful Coach in the history of English football and at Manchester United has made the decision official on Wednesday morning.”
