‘Messi capable of playing’

Andoni Zubizarreta has confirmed that Lionel Messi “is capable of playing” for Barcelona against Bayern Munich, but that a final decision is still not made.

The Argentine travels out with the rest of his teammates today for tomorrow evening’s Champions League semi-final against the Germans without having received medical clearance on a thigh injury sustained almost three weeks ago against Paris Saint-Germain.

“Messi is capable of playing but he has not discharge. We have to decide if he is able to compete,” club sporting director Zubizarreta told reporters today.

“We are not going to give up on having the best we have in the field, whilst he is travelling because he is close to playing.

“We know of his importance, we saw it against PSG, but we’ll see if he can play.

“Hopefully yes, but our squad can compete in all circumstances.

“The game? It is very demanding when you get to this stage of the season. We are going to enjoy this round and see how far we can reach our performance and competitiveness.

“Now it is time to finish everything that we have done this year.”

The former goalkeeper also offered an ironic comment for how the League has seemingly taken a backseat.

“The League was the most important competition a few months ago and now it seems to be an underground tournament played at the weekends.”
