Mel: No time for Europa maths

Pepe Mel has reflected that Real Betis may need more points than were required last year to qualify for Europe, but that now is not the time for maths.

Los Beticos are in with an outside chance of reaching Europe this season, as they currently sit seventh in La Liga, two points behind Valencia in sixth and four behind Real Sociedad in fourth.

“When you target an ambitious goal, your only objective is to win it. Betis are safe, it has given pleasure to the team to know that,” commented Mel to reporters today.

“Can we make Europe? Levante picked up 55 points and got into Europe last year and maybe that won’t be enough this year.

“It is best not to do the maths and instead focus on Granada. The next game is the requirement and nothing else.

“You have to know how to evaluate the players that you have. When to pressure them and when to not. Psycology is important.

“If they are young and less mature then we have to release the pressure rather than build it up.”

Mel was talking ahead of facing Granada this Friday evening.

“We know what it is to fight against relegation. It is the most unpleasant side of football. That’s not going to happen this year thankfully.

“We’ve told the players to get under the skin of Granada, who are playing for their future.

“Granada have always made it difficult for Betis so we expect an ambitious opponent this weekend, because they cannot be any other way.

“They have good players and at home will have a lot of support too.”

The Coach is rumoured to be set to be offered a three-year contract extension, although talks have yet to begin.

“I understand that my renewal is not a priority for Betis. I agree. There is no rush. They know they have a Coach who is happy to work here.

“I am not worried because I know what I feel. Of course I would like to continue here. Having stability is good for everyone.

“Decisions are being made calmly.”
