Diego Simeone has conceded that Atletico Madrid would like to finish above Real Madrid in La Liga, but that they are not looking beyond the next game.
Atleti had sat for much of the season above their city rivals in the League standings, but have recently been overtaken and currently sit in third, a point back on Jose Mourinho’s side.
“When you are 15th in the table, you want to be 14th. When you are third, you want to be second,” reflected Simeone to reporters today.
“You always want to move forward. We want to finish as high as we can. We have to create this opportunity by playing at our best.
“It is great what we have done so far. If we want more then we have to give more. But now we are not thinking towards second, but of Getafe [this weekend].
“How important is second place? Knowing this group, I know they are ambitious. There are clear goals ahead. We cannot afford to look beyond Getafe.
“The League has shown that every week every field is difficult to play in. Getafe play well in midfield and attack at set-pieces.”
