Rayo negotiate River Plate friendly

Rayo Vallecano and River Plate have held initial negotiations this week over the possibility of playing a friendly this summer.

River’s Vice-President Diego Turnes was in Madrid again this week and confirmed that he and Rayo President Raul Martin Presa met with the proposition of organising a pre-season friendly for 2013.

“Hopefully, this meeting is a starting point to maintain a continuous dialogue and communication,” Turnes told reporters today.

“Perhaps this yearning that we have had with the President of Rayo to join the teams together in a friendly can be realised, because it would be a pleasure for both of us and for both the clubs.

“It has been something that has been suggested for many years given the similarity, unity and affection between the two institutions.

“We had the opportunity to go to the stadium, and I found a very affectionate fanbase, similar to that in Argentina.

“Their shirt I love too, which is so similar to ours, it causes me the same excitement as with River.”

Presa presented Turnes with a Rayo shirt at the meeting, signed by all the players including former River Plate man Chori Dominguez.

The two clubs have met only once before, back in August 1978 in the Trofeo Villa de Madrid when a solitary strike from Norberto Alonso settled the friendly in the Argentines’ favour.
