‘Athletic encouraged by win’

Mikel San Jose says that Athletic Bilbao are revitalised for having comfortably dispatched Atletico Madrid this weekend.

Marcelo Bielsa’s struggling side surprisingly recorded a 3-0 win over the second placed Atleti on Sunday evening to hint at an improved second half to the season for the Basques.

“This was a victory against a team that recently has done a lot of damage to us, who are second in the League and, despite playing with several changes are still a great team,” reflected San Jose to reporters after training today.

“We have been excellent, it has encouraged us and has given us a lot of confidence.

“We are not looking down the table but up. We need points to improve on our situation.”

The next chance the team have to improve their 13th place in the table comes with Friday’s trip to Real Valladolid.

“They are doing very well and they are relaxed in the table with 28 points. They handle the ball well and although they have not recently had the best results, they are able to do things very well.”
