Xavi: Casillas a big miss

Xavi Hernandez has reflected on Real Madrid’s loss of Iker Casillas through injury, the ‘keeper’s issue with Jose Mourinho and the upcoming Clasico.

Ahead of the weekend’s game against Osasuna, the Barcelona midfielder took the Friday Press conference, but generally faced questions on the following Wednesday’s confirmed fixture against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg.

Initial questions focused on Casillas, who, a long time friend of Xavi’s, will miss the game and could be out for up to two months after fracturing his hand in midweek.

“His injury is a problem. He is the soul of Madrid and their captain. It is a significant injury for Real Madrid and the national team. We have sent him messages of support,” reflected Xavi to reporters today.

“I talk to him a lot, we message each other, send encouragement. I have given him encouragement at moments, like when his Coach saw fit not to start him in the team.

“That took me by surprise. It is amazing that suddenly a goalkeeper who has played for many years then does not play. That surprised me, but it is a topic for them.

“These are complicated issues, it is not for me to comment. They will be two months without Iker, who is a cornerstone at Madrid and for the national team.

“Aside from that I cannot comment. They look to not be having a good time with the Press or institutionally. But now we will face them in the semi-final and they are a complicated opponent who could eliminate us.”

The midfielder then looked ahead to next week’s meeting with Madrid at the Bernabeu.

“It is always hard against Madrid, there is tension, nerves, everyone wants to win, but that’s it. We are going to try and give the best image for the whole world.

“Playing the second leg at home will be in our favour. It will be important to score and the more the merrier. We’ll have a tough tie with the possibility of deciding it in front of our own fans.

“The Clasicos are unpredictable. You never know when you will have a good time. Realistically we feel good, but we are ready to compete well.”

Xavi also commented on recent performances and admitted that there is room for improvement.

“Overall we are good, but we need to close out games better. At Anoeta and against Malaga we have been in a position to decide the game.

“I think the team has been at a good level and we are on our way. Now comes a very nice tie against Madrid and we want to enjoy it in every way.”
