‘Barca deserved to win’

Assistant Coach Jordi Roura believes that Barcelona did enough across the two ties to win their quarter-final against Malaga.

La Blaugrana needed late goals from Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi to record a 4-2 win on Thursday evening at La Rosaleda and settle the two-legged Copa del Rey match 6-4 in their favour.

“It has been a difficult tie. Malaga were level from the first leg and we had to come here to win,” reflected Roura afterwards.

“We celebrated our victory with a lot of joy because we were very aware of how difficult this match was going to be.

“I think that overall we merited the pass to the next round because we had more chances.

“Once again, these players proved what they are made of. They gave a footballing lesson, and they’ve given quite a few! Frankly, the whole team played well.

“The first half we were playing well, creating chances but the state of play was a little closed off. At half-time I told them to relax because the chances will come.

“We knew that we had to score twice to draw the tie. It was foreseeable and luckily we got the lead we needed.

“The pitch? We could do nothing about that here. The pitch was really bad. It has hurt both teams, but it was difficult to play on.”

Roura also explained that Lionel Messi was taken off towards the end as a precaution, for having issues with the adductor muscle in his right leg.
