Garcia intends for Getafe stay

Luis Garcia has made clear that he will not walk away from Getafe, after facing some protesting supporters last week.

Getafe’s 1-1 draw with Osasuna on Saturday was to the ire of a section of the crowd at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, who called for Garcia to leave.

However, following on from President Angel Torres’ backing, Garcia has declared his intention to improve the team’s fortunes, rather than abandon them.

“My idea is to see out my contract and from there hopefully extend it further,” he told reporters in this week’s pre-match Press conference.

“The President and I have a good connection, we are very clear on what we want, but in football it is hard to think of more than one week.

“I am very happy here, we are getting good results and hopefully we will be able to do well this year and the next, and we’ll see if there is more.

“It is nice to have the support of the President but either way I will continue working.”

Garcia’s chance to leave fans with a happy memory for Week 17 comes with a trip out to Valencia, who have lost their last two home games.

“Adding a third defeat would be hard for them, but for us the game is also important. Valencia have had a coaching change and are still adapting to his philosophy.

“Valencia will come out with anger, knowing that they have to, in order to fight for the Champions League places, so I expect a strong opponent.

“We are three points above them in the table and we must continue to hold at least that distance after the game.”

Garcia was asked of President Torres’ assertions this season that the team can aim for European qualification.

“The President, speaking about aiming for Europe, is very ambitious. It is all going to depend on what the teams like Valencia, Sevilla and Athletic do, who are now underperforming, and whether or not they can re-engage with the European places.

“If those teams improve, as they should for their potential, then it will be harder to catch a European place.

“In past years with our options we have not been able to achieve that. Being seventh now is very good, but if Valencia come back with a good figure before January 1 then it will be very hard for us. We have 24 points, and to close the year with 25 or 27 would be nice.”
