Benzema, France’s Player of 2012

Karim Benzema has picked up France Football’s French Player of the Year award on Monday evening, for the second successive year.

The Real Madrid striker, who won the League title with his club during the calendar year, was presented with the award recognising France’s best player of the last 12 months by Real Madrid colleague Zinedine Zidane.

It is the second year in a row that Benzema has won the award and only the third occasion that it has been handed to a Frenchman based in La Liga, following on from 2002’s award to Zidane himself.

Benzema was shortlisted for this year’s prize alongside Franck Ribery and Hugo Lloris. The winner is voted for by past recipients of the award.

“I am very happy to receive this prize for the second year running. It is good for me and it is an honour that Zidane presented it because for me he is the best French player in history. It is a dream that it was him who presented me with the award,” commented the 24-year-old in taking the trophy.
