Aguirre promises Espanyol fight

Javier Aguirre has been presented to the media today as Espanyol’s Coach and has promised a fresh start for the team.

The Mexican, who has previous La Liga experience with the likes of Osasuna, Real Zaragoza and Atletico Madrid, was brought in to replace Mauricio Pochettino this week.

“We have to pick up the points in the next 25 games. This is a quality team that have not achieved the results so far that they have deserved,” declared Aguirre in setting out his ambitions with Espanyol, who currently sit bottom of the League.

“For various reasons the team are not where they should be. Yes it is something of an emergency, but with time, willpower and desire, the players can join together.

“We are against the clock and will do what it takes. Every week I will select the 18 top players and of these, start the 11 best. I am up front and those who know me will say that I am honest.

“I would like to turn the page, start from scratch and have us all move forward together. Results will strengthen the spirit, we must add, add, add points, so the game against Granada this weekend is very important.

“Yes I like to play well, but we need to progress and not be afraid of anything. With head, heart and determination, this team can save itself.”
