Mallorca boss criticises Ronaldo

Real Mallorca boss Joaquin Caparros has condemned Cristiano Ronaldo for his antics in Real Madrid’s 5-0 win over the Islanders.

Ronaldo riled the home fans by cupping his hand to his ear after scoring against Los Bermellones, and it is actions such as these that Caparros believes loses the Portuguese striker the respect of supporters.

“He needs to show a lot more humility and a lot more ambition in other things because as a footballer he has it all.

“The statistics are there to prove it but he loses all that in these type of situations,”  said the 57-year-old in an interview with Punto Pelota.

Caparros also insisted it makes Ronaldo less worthy of winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

“The Ballon d’Or is the sum of many values, like when they gave it to [Zinedine] Zidane or Kaka. It’s the sum of a lot of things both on and off the pitch so it wouldn’t be strange if he didn’t win it.

“People within the game have to show these values and pass them on. It’s an award where everyone in the world wants to know the winner and right now every team will campaign for their own player.

“Each of the 20 La Liga teams could say their own man deserves it. It’s like with cyclist [Miguel] Indurain because you’d have to give it to Lionel Messi, who is way ahead of everybody else.

“However, in the end it is all about marketing and advertising and those that do it right will take the award, although Messi is far and away the best.”

Asked if Messi was sometimes wrong in his attitude, Caparros maintained some things should just be struck from the record.

“You should just remove them. Didn’t they take six Tour de France titles off [Lance] Armstrong? Just take them away and give it to someone else.”
