Fullbacks union – Torres backs Torres

Getafe defender Miguel Torres has joined Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone in defending Juanfran Torres from criticism.

Juanfran, a substitute for Alvaro Arbeloa in Spain's 1-1 draw with France last night, was complicit in La Roja's concession of a late equaliser, but Torres believes his namesake and fellow fullback should be cut some slack.

“I was sad because he is a player who has been working very well and deserved his place in the seleccion,” the 26-year-old told AS.

“He did very well in showing face to justify his mistake, and I am sure his Coach and peers will continue to support him. He will continue in the seleccion, growing stronger and better.”

Turning to club business, Torres is desperate for Getafe to record a third consecutive La Liga win, over Levante this Sunday lunchtime.

“One of our most important goals is to add a third consecutive victory. Another is to do well in the morning, because last year we had some great performances at that kick-off time.

“Levante are a great rival who had a good finale to last season. I sense a tough game which will hopefully go our way.”

The former Real Madrid right back is happy with his form, despite playing out of position at left back this term.

“I always start with the same idea, to work with and for the club. I'm very happy at left back, and will play in any position required.

“I think the Coach is satisfied with my work.”

Luis Garcia Plaza's outfit are currently 9th and could end the weekend in an unusually lofty position if they win on Sunday.
