Verdu: Espanyol not given up

Joan Verdu has reassured that Espanyol have not given up despite their poor start to the season and that luck will change in their favour.

Defeat at the weekend away to Real Betis has piled on the pressure at the Cornella El-Prat, as after five rounds the team find themselves joint bottom of the League with just a solitary point to their name.

“We cannot give up and think that everything is already decided,” says Verdu in today’s Press conference.

“The team has the desire to reverse the situation, we know this will change sooner or later. The results so far do not correspond with our performances, there has been little reward.

“If we do not win it is because we have not done something well, we are the first to recognise that things have to be improved.

“But we also need a bit of luck, maybe in another situation the ball bounces off the post and goes in, instead of bouncing out.

“There is no bad atmosphere in the dressing room. Everyone would like to pick up more points, but now we have to be more united than ever. We will think positively, regain our confidence and look ahead.”

Looking ahead takes Verdu to the team’s next match, at home to an as yet unbeaten Atletico Madrid.

“At home we will be at our best. It will be a tough game. The arrival of [Diego] Simeone has given them something that they did not have before.”
