Guerrero still hurts for Athletic exit

Julen Guerrero has marked the 20th anniversary of both his debut and first goal for Athletic Bilbao with a message of regret.

The attacking midfielder spent his entire career with Athletic, from his debut on September 6, 1992 through to his retirement in July 2006.

September marks 20 years since his debut and also 20 years since his first goal, with the later coming on September 20, 1992.

However, in meeting this anniversary and launching official Twitter and Facebook pages, the 41-times-capped Spaniard reflected on how his impact at the club could have been even greater.

“I scored 116 goals, but I firmly believe that if I had played more in the later years there would have been more,” he posted today.

“Anyway, I am proud of each and every one of them.”

Guerrero fell out of favour at the club in his final few years on the pitch and once went almost 18 months without a first team appearance.

Averaging a goal every four games, the Biscay-born player retired at the age of 32, in an emotional Press conference.
