Martins: Here to play, not earn

Obafemi Martins is keen to get started with Levante and says he is fit to play, despite having not trained for several weeks.

The player managed to cancel his contract with Russian side Rubin Kazan last week, after several weeks on the sidelines out of favour.

In doing so he was able to then sign for Levante on a two-year deal, with an option for a third. Unveiled today, he made clear his ambition at the club is not financial.

“I hope to do well myself. I came here because I wanted to play. I do not think about the money. Otherwise, I would have stayed at Rubin. I’m happy to be here,” he told reporters at his official presentation today.

“I had a problem with Rubin, which is why it was a few days before I arrived here. Now it is up to the Coach when I play. I want to help the team.

“Whether I score one or two, the important thing is to do well and score goals. I will always do my somersault celebration, but the important thing is to score first, and then do the flip.”
