Valdes, Del Horno charged with fraud

It has emerged today that Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes and former Valencia full-back Asier Del Horno are facing charges of fraud.

The duo are facing the charge for allegedly falsifying qualification documents that stated they were trained as skippers.

Spanish newspaper Las Provincias report that the 30-year-old shot-stopper and the Barakaldo-born free agent were two of over 100 people involved in a scam that allowed them to drive pleasure yachts along the Spanish coast without having taken the correct exams necessary.

Motor boats up to four metres in length do not need to be skippered by a licensee according to Spanish law, but all other vessels need an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) if they are to be driven on Iberian waters.

The Blaugrana No 1 was allegedly charged in Barcelona when he returned to the city after Spain's European Championship win in July, with the 'keeper denying all charges made against him.

He was however, allegedly unable to explain how his ID had shown up on one of the computers linked to this criminal investigation.

Del Horno on the other hand, has reportedly admitted that he knew a member of the group, but again, was unable to explain how his identification could be in any way involved.

Both men were 'charged but not arrested', with the investigation set to continue. Former Real Madrid footballer Ivan Helguera was linked to something similar in 2008.
