Mascherano pens new Barca deal

Midfielder Javier Mascherano has agreed an improved contract with Barcelona that will see him tied to the club until June 2016.

The Catalans announced the news via their official website, where it was also confirmed that the rescission clause in the 28-year-old’s contract has now been raised to €100m from its previous €90m.

Mascherano, who joined Barca for a reported €20m from Liverpool in August 2010, has not missed a single match through injury since the 2010-11 season and has played in 97 official games for La Blaugrana.

“Mascherano has turned into a fundamental player for us. He hasn’t had a bad game since Guardiola put him in the middle of the defence and his experience makes him fundamental in the dressing room,” said Leo Messi just days ago.

His new contract, which will also include a salary increase, was due to be signed this week but has had to be put on hold for a few days because of Barca’s friendly games in Hamburg and Tangiers, and the fact that club President Sandro Rosell is away enjoying a holiday with his family.
