Sevilla moved into the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in 1958 and in 1974 it was further redeveloped to make room for 70,000 spectators, although this was reduced for the 1982 World Cup when a roof built on stilts over the main stand was added. One of the games to be played there was the France-West Germany semi-final and it also staged a group game between Brazil and the Soviet Union

The capacity was further reduced to 45,500 in the 1990s when the change to all-seater stadia was made.

The ground also played host to the 1986 European Cup final between Barcelona and Steaua Bucharest and is the only stadium in Spain where the Spanish national team has never lost a match.
