Balaidos was inaugurated in December 1928 after the job of diverting the River Lagares, which these days is straddled by the rear of the main stand, was completed. In the late 1960s the ground was completely redeveloped and was subsequently used as a venue for the 1982 World Cup, hosting three group games.

Consisting of a double-tiered main stand overlooking three lower ones, Balaidos was converted into an all-seater arena in 1996, although it failed a UEFA inspection when Celta qualified for the Champions League in 2003, before the local municipality paid for it to be upgraded.

An incident in February 2017 saw heavy storms damage a part of the stadium, prompting the Galicians’ game against Real Madrid to be postponed.
