Sporting Gijon beat Eibar 1-0 on Sunday for their second straight win but were nonetheless relegated after results went against them.
Sporting needed to beat Eibar and Deportivo La Coruna to avoid picking up anything in their respective matches, and while the Asturians rode their luck at times, Burgui’s angled finish was enough for the victory.
However, Leganes rescued a 1-1 draw at San Mames and Depor held Villarreal to a stalemate, meaning it was Sporting that joined Osasuna and Granada in relegation to Segunda.
“The dressing room has fallen apart, [the players] are feeling emotional and having a bad time,” admitted Coach Rubi, who suffered the same fate with Levante last season.
“We’re very hurt, both individually and for everyone around us, but I want to show my gratitude to the fans who came here.
“Sporting are a Primera team and it won’t be long before we return because we have great fans.”
