Diego Simeone admits Atletico Madrid “rely heavily” on the form of Antoine Griezmann after the forward ended his goal drought against Eibar.
Griezmann scored his first La Liga goal since October during Atleti’s 2-0 victory over Eibar on Sunday, which pushed his side back into the top four, and Simeone confessed Los Colchoneros needed the Frenchman to “round off” their hard work.
“It was more great work from the team, it was very important, with the intention of playing in accordance of what the game asked and with great spirit, against a very good team,” he said after the game.
“In the first half we found it difficult, they were better than us, but in the second 45 we found the game we wanted.
“Gimenez in midfield? He played as I expected. It’s not an easy position and less so on a tight pitch like [Ipurua].
“At half-time I told him it was normal what was happening to him. In the second half we played like we did at the beginning.
“Griezmann? We rely heavily on Griezmann’s form to round off our teamwork, the same applies with Fernando and Gameiro, but the priority is teamwork, not giving up a single ball.
“We’ve taken a step forward. Details count for a lot at a place like this.”
