Diego Simeone was more positive about Athletic Bilbao than their own Coach Marcelo Bielsa in this 3-0 defeat of Atletico Madrid.
The Basques ran out convincing winners on Sunday evening and, following on from a 1-1 result the previous week at Real Betis, their Coach faced questions post-match of a possible revival this term.
“We were lucid at times, like we were in some phases against Real Betis, but we need continuity,” Bielsa responded to reporters.
“If we can extend the acceptable level of play then we can start talking about recovery from the first half of the season.
“Atletico are a team that have a way of unbalancing you, with different ways to reach the goal. We needed attention, concentration and stress and we have to play with this attributes.”
Simeone was more positive about Athletic, in defending the changes he made to Atletico’s starting line-up.
“We knew of the difficulty we would face with Athletic,” reflected Simeone afterwards.
“Both teams generated chances, but after their second goal they felt more comfortable and finished the game well. They deservedly won.
“The changes made? The previous match with Betis in the Copa and against Levante in La Liga we made five changes, and we again made so many to give freshness to the team. They responded very well to the first goal.
“Will it affect the Cup semi-final in midweek? No.”
