Spain confirm Netherlands trip for first Luis Enrique match

Spain will face the Netherlands in a friendly this March in Amsterdam ahead of the European Championships next summer.

The news was confirmed by the Spanish FA on Monday with the fixture the first confirmed for La Roja ahead of the finals.

The fixture will take place at the Johan Cruyff Arena – home of Dutch giants Ajax – on 29 March and is scheduled to be the first match in which Luis Enrique is back in the dugout for the Spanish national team.

Luis Enrique stepped down from the role of Spain boss earlier this year to look after his terminally ill daughter, who tragically then passed away – with his former assistant Robert Moreno replacing him in the hotseat.

Moreno guided Spain to the European Championships next summer with an unbeaten record – seven wins from nine games – but has now been relieved of his duties by the Spanish FA.

Moreno – previous number two at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – is said to be very well-liked within La Roja’s squad but had repeatedly publicly said he would step down should Enrique feel he could return to the role.

However, the situation has led to acrimony and a public fallout between the two, with Moreno no longer part of the coaching setup with the Spain national team.
