Real Betis boss Rubi: I did not leave Espanyol for money

New Real Betis boss Rubi has hit out at the ‘false information’ regarding his exit from Espanyol and has spoken of broken promises.

Rubi guided the Catalan club to their first European finish in 12 years but has accepted a switch to Betis and he has rejected claims he went behind Espanyol’s back or was a ‘traitor’.

“Until today I have kept silence out of respect for Espanyol and not to refute all the false information that has circulated about me,” Rubi has said, as cited by Diario Sport.

“I have never negotiated behind their back, it is not my way of being, I've always been upfront and the club has been informed at all times of what I have done.

“This has not been for money and in my sporting career I have shown that I move for other values: an example was my decision to sign for Espanyol last summer, rejecting two superior proposals

“Those who accuse me of being a traitor, tell them that I have limited myself to listening and finally ending up accepting a work proposal from another club like any employee who feels recognised and who has come to seek to perform their work at an optimal level.

“Despite some promises made in the past that the previous season would be the last with difficulties, it transpires that next year will also be a difficult season for the club (Espanyol).

“I have discovered that at a sporting level it would be difficult to strengthen to be able to compete for a stronger finish, I was informed we would not make an ambitious step forward with the sports project.

“I will always defend Espanyol and its brilliant history.”
