Granada clinch promotion back to La Liga

Granada gained promotion back to La Liga following a two-year absence after securing a 1-1 draw at Real Mallorca on Tuesday.

Federico San Emeterio’s equaliser two minutes from time rescued a draw for the Andalusian club but as it turned out, they would have been promoted in any case.

Third-placed Albacete needed to defeat Malaga to keep their slim automatic promotion hopes alive but they slipped to a 2-1 defeat.

Goals from Javi Ontiveros and Alfred N'Diaye put Malaga in control and, despite Roman Zozulya pulling a goal back for Albacete, they will have to settle for a playoff place, alongside Malaga.

Mallorca’s draw against El Grana also secured their playoff spot, while Deportivo La Coruna (65 points), Cadiz (64) and Real Oviedo (63) will battle it out for the final place on the last day of the season.

Granada, who remain under Chinese ownership, were relegated from the topflight in 2017 under temporary boss Tony Adams but have undergone extensive squad renovation since.

This is the sixth promotion in the club’s history and they join Andalusian clubs Sevilla and Real Betis in La Liga.
