UEFA have banned Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos for an additional Champions League match “for clearly receiving a yellow card on purpose.”
The Madrid captain fouled Ajax striker Kasper Dolberg in the 89th minute with Madrid 2-1 up in Amsterdam, a booking ruling him out of the return leg.
The central defender told reporters in the immediate aftermath of the match that he “forced the foul” but later clarified his remarks.
“I was talking about forcing the foul, not the booking, because the foul was inevitable,” Ramos said.
“They had a very dangerous counter-attack with two minutes remaining, it is a very open match and tie.”
UEFA subsequently opened an investigation and gave the Spain international an additional one-match ban for obtaining a booking deliberately, ruling him out of a quarter-final first leg should Madrid qualify.
In a similar case last week, UEFA imposed a two-game Europa League ban on Valencia’s midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia.
