La Liga Round Up Week 24: Real Madrid suffer title blow after Girona defeat

Real Madrid suffered a blow in their quest to chase down La Liga leaders Barcelona, after a 2-1 home defeat to Girona.

Saniago Solari's side saw their La Liga unbeaten run end at five games, after second half goals from Cristhian Stuani and Cristian Portu cancelled out Casemiro's first half header.

That result means they drop back into third place in the table, as Atletico Madrid return to second, following a 1-0 win at Rayo Vallecano.

Ernesto Valverde's Barcelona were far from convincing in their 1-0 victory at home to Real Valladolid, with skipper Lionel Messi scoring and missing a penalty, as La Blaugrana ended the weekend seven points clear of Diego Simeone's side.

Fourth place Sevilla slipped to a 3-0 defeat away at Villarreal, however they were let off the hook somewhat, as fifth placed Getafe let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at Eibar on Friday night.

Relegation threatened Celta Vigo failed to boost their own chances of survival by losing 4-1 away at Levante and Real Sociedad gave their hopes of finishing in the Europa League qualification spots a lift, with a 3-0 victory at home to Leganes.

Alaves remain in sixth place after they secured a battling 1-1 draw away at Real Betis on Sunday night, and Valencia remain in the hunt for European football after a 0-0 draw at the Mestalla against Espanyol.

Bottom of the table Huesca host Athletic Bilbao on Monday night, as they look to build on back-to-back wins as they seek to pull off a miraculous escape from relegation.
