Santiago Solari: I trust VAR

Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari has given his support to VAR after his side benefited from the technology, for the second time in a week.

The defending European champions saw a penalty decision go in their favour in the weekend derby against Atletico Madrid, and Ajax had a goal ruled out in their Champions League clash with the Spanish side on Wednesday night.

Defender Nicolas Tagliafico thought he had headed the home side in front at the Johan Cruyff Arena, only for the referee to consult his video assistant and overturn the goal due to a foul on Thibaut Courtois, by Dusan Tadic.

The Ajax players were angered by the incident, however Solari believes it was the correct call.

"I am yet to see the incident closely, as we do not have a monitor.

"However, we trust in VAR and in what the referee says in these moments"

Substitute Marco Asensio scored the winner in the Netherlands, his first goal since December, and Solari was impressed with the Spanish international's late cameo.

"I am very happy with his goal – and with his performance.

"He did everything I asked of him when he came on.

"He defended well, when needed, and was effective in front of goal when we needed him."
