Lionel Messi nets 400th La Liga goal as Barcelona ease past Eibar

Lionel Messi scored his 400th goal in La Liga and Luis Suarez netted a double as Barcelona eased to a 3-0 win over Eibar.

It was the Argentine’s 435th league game and the strike took him 89 goals clear of Cristiano Ronaldo, who sits second in the all-time scoring charts with 311 league goals.

It was Messi’s attacking partner Suarez who opened the scoring, swivelling and striking home from close-range after some build-up with Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian was a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up, preferred to Ousmane Dembele, and was Barca’s brightest attacking star throughout the game.

However, it was Suarez and Messi who combined for the landmark goal seven minutes after the break with the star of the show firing low into the corner of the net.

That essentially killed the game as a contest but equally started Barca’s best ten-minute spell of the game, culminating in Suarez adding a third before the hour mark.

Barca are now five points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of the league while Eibar slip to 16th, just three points from the relegation zone.
