Thomas Vermaelen injury ‘accelerates Barcelona ideas in transfer market’

A fresh injury for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has ‘accelerated the club’s need’ to sign a new central defender in January, say El Mundo Deportivo.

Ongoing knee problems for Samuel Umtiti and the Belgian’s constant injury record has led to shortages in the heart of defence for the Catalan giants.

Vermaelen has started just 33 league games across the last six seasons although 12 of those arrived under Ernesto Valverde last season.

Real Sociedad's Diego Llorente, Jorge Mere of Cologne and Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen are the three names the report link to a move to the Camp Nou.

Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet are Barca’s two starting central defenders while Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt is a long-term target in the position.
